It has been said by the ancient wise that Happiness never decreases by being shared. May we formally invite you to our happy place. Our original, the epic, the big one, the foundation, the mother ship…. Red Rock Relay #ZION.
If those ancient wise ones would have known about RRR Zion, I would bet you $2.17 that the for sure would have ran it. if I lose the bet, are you cool with pennies or maybe a personal check, do they still have those?
Whether you have never done a relay, or you are the veteran who has done everything from Wasatch back to Hood to Coast and points in between you need to #BEHERENOW. Red Rock Relay Zion was developed in strict adherence to that age-old wisdom that happiness increases when being shared.
Teams of 12 run relay style through 187 miles of southern Utah’s most stunning landscapes in a journey that starts on a Friday morning at Brian Head ski resort and ends sometime the following day (even if it felt like years) at the base of Zion National Park. Passing Cedar Breaks National Monument, Navajo Lake, Lava fields, lonely Desert, the amazing Snow Canyon, the wonderful city of St. George, Gooseberry Mesa and the Virgin River Gorge.
Teams split into two vans so one set of six runners can rest while the other set of six takes turns running their legs. Vans switch off running and resting until each runner has run three times, and then they are all standing together in an exhausted daze at the finish line, gazing up at the base of an extraordinary red rock monolith at the mouth of ZION National Park.
At this moment you can see the pride and sense of accomplishment welling up within them and fighting to get to the surface, despite being blocked by some severely over-taxed sweat glands. For 24-36 hours they have kept each other hydrated, eaten out of a cooler, laughed hysterically and danced maniacally, stayed close together in the dark, and possibly slept for a minute or three. It has been a journey of a lifetime, or in your top 217 best experiences handing you fulfillment and achievement to last…..at least three water cooler conversations next week at work.
And really, these are the race shirts? OMG how did you make them so soft and yummy. “I’m never taking it off”

Drivers Start your engines….I mean …Runners, on your mark, get set, GOOOOO! The race begins at the Doubletree Grand Lodge in Brian Head, Utah. Most likely we, as organizers will get out of our warm cozy and comfy bed to get you started on time. have a one-mile dash through the chilled morning air. Their first destination is the ski resort, where they wrap up in blankets and board a chairlift that takes them up to the start of their 3.5 mile trail run, and yes it’s marked super good and no it’s not technical so don’t freak out. #please.
From that illustrious beginning, things just continue getting more scenic and delightful as the team’s cruise through Cedar Breaks (HOLY COW gorgeous overlooks), down Cedar Canyon (OH MUH HECK speedy downhill runs), through Newcastle and Veyo (SHUCKS, DANG stunning views) and through Hurricane out to Springdale (GEE WHIZ awesome sauce finish line). The start line elevation is over 11,000 feet and the finish is 3,000, so for those of you who never were good at math, that means a net loss of 8,000 feet in elevation over the course of 187 miles.
That there, my friends, is the formula for relay perfection. AND limited to 250 teams you won’t be stuck in traffic jams from start to finish, but will have just the right amount of other teams to show off, flirt, cheer, help, break dance fight and take pics for one another. Come eat it up!
